About Us
Meet the folks behind Timber Lane Totem Poles and Waterfalls.
Douglas Jewell
Douglas has navigated an interesting and inquisitive path through life, experiencing many different lifestyles and re-inventing himself time and again.
A product of the '60s and '70s, his wanderlust began shortly after college in Massachusetts. First it was a 7,000 mile cross country journey to the West Coast and back in an old van. Then there was some time spent caddying on the PGA Tour. The West Coast bug was still there, so it was off again in another van, this time with his future wife to a small southern California coastal town. Life was a beach!
In '76, the Bi-Centennial year, they embarked on a 9,000 mile hitchhiking odyssey, finally landing three months later in southern Oregon, where a lifelong dream of being a dairy farmer came to fruition. Several years later, with a newborn daughter in tow, it was off to Maine to a little cabin in the woods. What a pioneer life! No plumbing, no running water. Loved it! A son was born there, also.
Nine years later, freshly divorced, it was off to North Carolina working for a surveyor. A couple years later, southern New Jersey beckoned. There he met the love of his life, Joyce, and they've been together 16 years.
During that span, Joyce supported Douglas' need to travel and experience. He went to the Virgin Islands for a half year right after Hurricane Hugo and was a construction foreman rebuilding damaged homes. The next year there was an adventurous stint in the Montana mountains. In 1994, at age 43, Douglas felt the need to hitchhike one last time, this time going solo. This two-month, 9,000 mile frolic was a defining moment.
Returning to Joyce and South Jersey once more, Douglas resumed his sports writing career. After nine years and 5,000 published articles, Douglas retired and joined Joyce in the real estate business. They opened Jewell Real Estate Agency in Swainton, NJ in 2000, then the following year opened an office in Wildwood Crest, NJ. Shortly thereafter, the real estate boom hit and the rest is history.
With their financial future secure, Douglas has now returned to his artsy side. What better way to satisfy the need to create and build - and at the same time leave a lasting legacy - than create totem poles and waterfalls. Both are unique crafts, and challenging enough to keep the mind active and life challenging. Totem poles and waterfalls share a common thread - they are inspirational, thought provoking, enduring, and offer classic, natural beauty. We hope you share that vision and appreciate our passion.
Joyce Jewell
Joyce Jewell has had a more traditional background than her husband, while still experiencing a rich, fulfilling life.
Joyce - maiden name Giacomucci - grew up in northeast Philadelphia in a close-knit, large extended Italian family. She moved to New Jersey in the ‘70s, finally settling in Cape May County later in the ‘70s, where she raised her four children.
Joyce earned her New Jersey real estate license in 1978. Her bubbly personality, down-home warmth, and obvious integrity were a perfect fit in a business that rewards such characteristics. She has been the driving force that made Jewell Real Estate Agency a success.
A wake-up call came in May, 2004 when Joyce was diagnosed with breast cancer. The lump was surgically removed, but the Jewell’s were reluctant to follow the route that requires chemotherapy and radiation. There had to be a better alternative. A videotape by Dr. Lorraine Day steered Joyce toward immediately going to a vegetarian diet, and days later the Hallelujah Acres Diet entered the pictured. It was a turning point in their lives.
Douglas supported Joyce and joined her in the Hallelujah Acres “lifestyle”. Meat, dairy products, sugar, white flour, caffeine and liquor were gone from their diet, replaced with organic vegetables and fruits. Carrot juice is the central point of the diet, and the Jewell’s were juicing 100 pounds of carrots per week, which yielded six 8-ounce glasses each per day. They also squeezed eight oranges each morning and enjoyed their fresh juice to start the day.
The Hallelujah lifestyle coincided perfectly – and coincidentally - with the Jewell’s newly erected greenhouse and raised vegetable beds. Now they eat their homegrown, organically raised lettuces, spinach, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, scallions and more nearly 300 days per year.
Joyce is an unofficial ambassador for the Hallelujah Acres way of life. She is always ready to share her experiences. You can reach her at 609-780-7131.
